Philippine Sitio Belis Garnica
Roast Level: Light Roast
Single Origin from returning favorite Philippines Sitio Belis. Very smooth and creamy with a few delicate notes, this light-medium roast makes a great daily drinker.
This is a wet processed coffee; at Mostra, we are getting away from saying “washed” or “natural” due to the misconceptions those terms still somehow engender.
Garnica is a hybrid that is ripe when orange, as opposed to reaching a red hue. Garnica was developed by the Mexican Coffee Institute (INMECAFÉ) in 1960-61, through the crossing of Mundo Novo with Caturra Amarillo. Adaptation trials were established in 1978-79, but INMECAFÉ was dissolved in 1989 before pedigree selections were completed. Sitio Belis sits atop the Cordillera mountain range with an elevation of 1400 – 1700 masl. It is blessed with natural springs that flow all-year round and is home to vegetable and coffee growers.
This year, we sent it over to our friends at coffeereview.com who gave it 93 points! Here is their take:
Blind assessment: Balanced, richly sweet-tart. Apricot, cocoa nib, almond, lemon verbena, cedar in aroma and cup. Sweet structure with bright, juicy acidity; crisp, satiny mouthfeel. The finish consolidates to notes of cocoa-toned almond and lemond verbena.
The bottom line: An inviting washed Philippines cup with depth from cocoa notes and lift from stone fruit and sweet herbs.
